Credit where it's due

DirectAdmin gets a lot right

We're not going to pretend otherwise. If you run DirectAdmin today, you already have:

• A low, flat price — far cheaper than cPanel, with unlimited-account tiers.
• Free multi-PHP — multiple PHP versions through CustomBuild, no add-on.
• Your choice of web server — Apache, nginx, or OpenLiteSpeed, however you build it.
• Reseller accounts with resource allocation — out of the box.
• Let's Encrypt, email, DNS, databases — the fundamentals, included.

The catch is the word "build." DirectAdmin hands you the parts and a CustomBuild config. The pieces that keep customers isolated, sites fast and the box clean are yours to assemble, maintain, and — for the managed versions — still license.

The assembly

Where you still do the work yourself

• Real per-account isolation — DirectAdmin gives you disk and inode quotas, but hard CPU, memory and I/O limits with a filesystem cage still means adding CloudLinux (~$18/server/mo). MaxPanel: built in — hard per-account limits, quotas, and a filesystem cage.
• Security as one managed thing — you can hand-build a web application firewall through CustomBuild, but malware scanning and IP reputation as a bundle is Imunify360 (~$12+/server/mo), wired up by you. MaxPanel: on by default — a web application firewall with industry-standard rules, IP-reputation blocking, and malware scanning with auto-quarantine, plus automatic cleanup that strips infections and restores clean files from backup.
• Page caching without a rebuild — you can get LSCache by switching to OpenLiteSpeed in CustomBuild and living with its .htaccess limits. MaxPanel: a per-domain toggle on the standard nginx + Apache stack — plus warm PHP workers, a per-account object cache and Brotli.
• WordPress staging — cloning, staging and a one-click installer come from Installatron or Softaculous, licensed separately. MaxPanel: built in — install, stage, promote, roll back.
• The interface your customers expect — DirectAdmin's Evolution skin is cleaner than old cPanel, but it's still not the panel a 2026 customer expects, and there's no in-browser terminal or unified audit log. MaxPanel: a modern UI, browser terminal, full audit log.

Switching

Import your DirectAdmin accounts.

MaxPanel reads DirectAdmin's own user-backup format — over SSH or the DA API — and recreates each account here: files, databases, mailboxes and DNS. Move a few during the trial, on your own data, before you decide anything.

Honest about the trade: you give up DirectAdmin's build-it-yourself flexibility and its choice of web server. What you get back is the same result without the assembling — and an interface your customers won't email you about.
